PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CONNECTION TO HEALTH AND BEHAVIOR

  • Regulates functions of all of the other glands
  • Known as the "Master Gland"

DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION

  • Small pea-sized gland
  • Located near midbrain and hypothalamus
  • Made up of theee lobes Anterior, Intermediate, and Posterior
  • (Posterior is part if the brain)

ANTERIOR

  • Hormones released regulate growth and stimulate adrenal and thyroid gland
  • Gonadotropins: hormones it releases

INTERMEDIATE LOBE

  • Releases hormones that stimulate melanocytes, cells that contain pigmentation

POSTERIOR

  • Creates hormone that puts water in kidneys to avoid dehydration
  • Also puts water in the blood stream

ROLE PLAYED FOR THE BODY

  • Produces prolactin which produces milk in breasts
  • Controls metabolism, blood pressure and growth rate
  • Responsible for sexual maturity and reproduction

MALFUNCTIONS

  • Makes to many hormones, acromegaly is the the disease produced
  • Most common malfunction is pituitary gland tumor most common in adults
  • Not classified as tumor or cancer
  • Can cause double vision and makes eye movement irregular
