SYMPTOMS

  • Jerky movements in arms and legs
  • Seizures
  • Behavior problems
  • Musty body smell
  • Delays in mental and social skills

DIAGNOSING PKU

  • Before leaving the hospital, doctors take a blood sample from the babies heel
  • Results come back a few days later
  • More tests can be done if parents so choose
  • Genetic

TREATMENT

  • Specialized diet
  • Testing often
