PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE PLAINS PEOPLE

TRIBES

The Blood, the Blackfoot, the Peigans, Tsuu T'ina, the Cree, the Sioux, the Stoney, the Assiniboine and the Ojibwa were all tribes associated with the plains.

LOCATION

The plains people lived in the foothills of Alberta and across the plains to as far as Manitoba.

ENVIRONMENT/HOUSING

The Canadian Prairies.were very flat lands with little forest area it was mostly covered in grass the winters are very cold and the summers very hot. They lived in tipis. They were warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Tipis were also easy to take down and transport.


FOOD

The plains people main food was buffalo but they also hunted deer elk moose wolves and rabbits they ate fresh and dried berries and some fish. They mostly used bows and arrows

TRANSPORTATON

The Plains People traveled mostly by foot. They also used dogs to pull small sleighs. Horses were used to help carry houses and supplies

RELIGION

The plains people believed in one god however they also believed that everything had a spirt

CEREMONIES

There were a few ceremonies the plains people did like the vision quest and the Sundanese ceremonies

ART

Many things were painted and decorated. Porcupine quills were used for many different things. They were sewn into designs for clothing, moccasins, bags, basket handles and pipe stems.

CLOTHING

All of the clothing was made from animal hide. Men wore shirts, breech cloths and full length leggings. Women wore dresses and shorter leggings. Everything was decorated different by tribe.

FAMILY

Men hunted,women built tipis, went and got water, tended to the children, cooked and got the wood for fires.

TRIBE RELATION

The Blackfoot tribe would marry into other tribes to ensure relationships with those tribes. They were nomadic so there were no real boundaries as there are today. However, there were often fights and wars between tribes, often because of theft.
