SILVER BUTTONWOOD - MULTI THRUNK (3x)
Waar:

Remarks: These are salt-tolerant Florida native plants. They're drought-tolerant once established but will also put up with "wet feet" occasionally. though green buttonwood is a better choice for areas that tend to stay moist.

Add top soil or organic peat moss, mixed with composted cow manure to the hole when you plant.

Trim to shape as needed, but avoid doing a hard pruning of more than 1/3 of the plant. Any hard pruning should be done in spring - late March or early April.

Water on a regular basis. Though this shrub is drought-tolerant once it's established, regular irrigation will keep it lush and full. If nothing else, at least give it a good drink during dry spells.

Fertilize 3 times a year - in spring summer, and autumn - with a high-quality granular fertilizer.

Silver buttonwood has velvety-soft leaves dusted with silvery-gray color and makes a stunning hedge, accent or small tree.

Like all silver foliage plants, this shrub's unusual color contrasts beautifully with all the green in a landscape.

It can look almost white in a landscape or take on a bluish cast.

These plants are especially effective when planted in combination with red, pink, purple, blue and white flowering plants.

They can function as clipped hedge shrubs or left to grow in a more natural shape.

There is a green variety but the silver is much showier and therefore more popular with homeowners.

large silver buttonwood shrub
Because the plant grows in a vase shape - wider at the top - and basically wants to be a tree, it's often somewhat bare at the bottom.

You can encourage this and use the plant as a multi-trunk tree. Or if you prefer the look of a single trunk tree, buy one from the nursery already trained that way.

Combineren: bij botltle palm zetten

Remarks: Partly shade to nearly full sun. It needs more water if in full sun. DO NOT allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Needs very humid air to keep the leaf tips from drying out and turning brown. Mist frequently. Another trick is to position the pot on a bed of gravel and water.

Fluoride in the water will cause the leaf tips to brown.

Remarks: Water Plumerias deeply, but infrequently, let soil dry out somewhat before watering again. "Plumerias do not like wet feet". Begin to reduce the frequency of watering in mid-October, as the cool season approaches. Stop watering after all the leaves have fallen and has gone dormant. Resume watering in the spring as new growth begins.
Feeding

Plumerias should be fed with a high nitrogen fertilizer beginning in spring when growth begins. To encourage the most blooms a switch to a high phosphorous fertilizer in early May and fertilize every 2 to 3 weeks through the end of August.

ABYSSIAN BANANA (2x owner)
Waar: in de tropical garden bij de pier maar goed in schaduw.

Remarks:
This relative of the edible banana is a valuable landscaping plant. Its form, texture and large leaves with conspicuous red midribs, create a lush, tropical effect.

Ensete ventricosum is a large, fleshy-stemmed plant with a head of banana-like leaves. The plant grows between 6 and 12 m high. It is a monocotyledon and does not have a true, branched trunk, but an unbranched pseudostem formed by the imbricated (overlapping) bases of petioles (leaf stalks), left behind when old leaves die. The pseudostem broadens towards the base and this gives rise to the species name ventricosum, which means 'with a swelling'. The plant seldom forms suckers from the base. The simple, large leaves with a thick, rose-pink midrib and numerous pinnately parallel nerves extending to the margin, are spirally arranged.

This plant only flowers and bears fruit once and then it dies. The flowers form large, showy bunches or spikes 2 to 3 m in length. The male flowers usually occur at the top and the female or bisexual flowers lower down. The cream-coloured flowers have only one petal, but are surrounded by large, showy, maroon bracts. Flowering usually takes place in early summer (October and November). Insipid, banana-like fruits form after flowering. They have a yellow skin with black spots and contain a row of pea-sized, hard, black seeds. Under normal conditions plants flower when they are about eight years old.

HELICONIA ROSTRATA (5x)
Waar: in de tropical garden bij de pier of in tuintje voor Alan zijn raam.

Remarks:
May grow up to 15 feet tall in nature but likely only to 3 to 6 feet in a home landscape. Leaves are glossy green, oval and paddle shaped. Flowers do not appear until this perennial is two years old. The plants grow and propagate from underground rhizomes, which can be broken apart and used to start a new plant.

Lobster claw plant thrives in either partial shade or full sun locations. The soil must be well draining, but fertile and moist. Potted plants will do well in a mixture of equal parts soil, fine wood mulch and peat moss. Slightly acidic soil is best. Plants grown in alkaline soil may exhibit iron deficiency in the form of yellowing to white leaves.

The plant is moderately drought tolerant but best results will ensue with consistent moisture. Ideal Heliconia growing conditions are humid and warm, similar to a tropical rainforest.

Lobster claw plant is a perennial that will arise every year from the rhizomes. New stems will develop after the old plant has flowered, creating a continuous display of the flowers over the years.

They need fertilizing in spring for best flowering and again every two months until fall. Cut back spent flowers and leaves as they occur. If you want more of these lovely plants in your garden, dig up the rhizome and cut behind recent growth.

Dig out the growth and cut the stem back to one foot. Wash the rhizome and plant it in a small pot with the eye near the surface of the soil. Keep the pot in shade and moderately moist until the first sprout. Then move it to protected sun and care for the new plant as usual.

Waar: in de tropical garden bij de pier of in tuintje voor Alan zijn raam.

Remarks:

Red ginger is a tropical plant that prefers temperatures consistently above 70 degrees F, in hardiness zone 11 and above. Grow in partial or filtered sunlight, but not full sunlight, in moist, rich soil that is enhanced monthly with fertilizer. It may develop chlorosis, a yellowing of the leaves, if grown in poorly draining soil.

When grown as a vine, it must be trained to grow on a support structure because it does not twine or have tendrils/aerial roots.
Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings.

Plumeria
Waar: links beneden bij pier. Ook naast muur Sluiter.

Remarks: Plumeria plants need to be grown in well-draining soil that is slightly acidic. They also need at least six hours of full sun. Fairly tolerant of both salt and windy conditions.

While plumerias don’t like wet feet, they should be watered deeply when irrigated and then allowed to dry out some before watering again. They also need to be fertilized about every two to three weeks throughout their active growing season. A high phosphate (phosphorus) fertilizer, like 10-30-10, will help encourage blooms. Giving them too much nitrogen will only result in more foliage growth and less flowering.

When growing plumeria plants in pots, use a coarse, well-draining potting mix—cactus mix or perlite and sand should be fine.
