WHAT IS A PLANT

  • Nearly all plants are autotrophs, organisms that produce their own food
  • All plants are eukaryotes that contain many cells. In addition, all plant cells are surrounded by cell walls

PLANT ADAPTIONS FOR LAND

  • Must have ways to obtain water and nutrients
  • They must be able to hold the water
  • They must transport materials in their bodies
  • They must support their bodies, and reproduce

NONVASCULAR PLANTS

  • There are three major groups of nonvascular plants
  • Mosses, Liverworts, and Hornworts
  • They live in moist areas where they can absorb water and nutrients

MOSSES

  • More than 10,000 species
  • Most diverse group of nonvascular plants
  • They grow in damp shady spots!
