PLATE TECTONICS

BY: KAYLA ZDANOWICZ

Definition of plate tectonics.
A theory explaining the structure of the earth's crust and many associated phenomena as resulting from the interaction of rigid lithospheric plates that move slowly over the underlying mantle.

Cause of plate movement #1
Convection currents- Is a force that moves the tectonic plates.

Cause of plate movement #2
Slab pull- is the portion of motion of a tectonic plate that can be accounted for by subduction.

Cause of plate movement #3
Ridge pull- or sliding plate force is a proposed mechanism for plate motion in plate tectonics.

Divergent Boundary

A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other.

Resulting landform from divergent plate boundary (land)

Resulting landform from divergent plate boundary (sea)

Convergent plate boundary - A plate boundary where two plates move toward each other.

Resulting landform from ocean vs continent.
Destructive plate boundary destroys the crust. An example is a mountain range.

Resulting landform from ocean vs ocean.
Destructive plate boundary crust is destroyed. An example, trench with island or underwater volcanic arc.

Resulting landform from continent vs continent
Destructive plate boundary crust is destroyed, mountain range is created .

Subduction zone - The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary.

Deep ocean trench - The oceanic trenches are hemispheric-scale long but narrow topographic depressions of the sea floor. They are also the deepest parts of the ocean floor.

Example of deep ocean trench - Oceanic trenches are a distinctive morphological feature of convergent plate boundaries , you would find them mostly around pacific oceans.

Transform plate boundary- a plate boundary where two plates move past each other in opposite directions.

Resulting event transform boundary is -
The crust is neither created or destroyed.

Example of transform boundary - two plates sliding past each other.
