PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLATE TECTONICS

JACOB STILES

1. What evidence did Alfred Wegener use to support his theory of continental drift?
A: He thought that once the world was one big piece of land and later separated. He also found the same plant fossil on two different continents.

2. Why do you think people didn't believe continental drift theory when Wegener first explained it?
A: Because he didn't prove why the continents separated.

3. Who were the two scientist that brought forth supporting evidence to Wegener's theory, and what was their evidence?
(A: Author Holmes and Harry Hess were the two scientists that brought forth evidence. They had a theory that the Earths mantle moved the continents.

4. What are the three different types of plate boundaries, describe each type?
A: Divergent boundaries is when crust is formed after two land pieces split apart. Convergent boundaries is when crust is destroyed by land going under other land. Transform boundaries is when two pieces of land slide past each other.

5. Give an example of a location on Earth where each type of plate boundary is present.
A: Divergent boundaries can be found at the oceanic Nazca Plate and the South American Plate. Convergent boundaries can be found at the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Transform boundaries are at the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate.

6. What are the three different types of convergent plate boundaries?
A: The three different types are Divergent, Convergent and Transform boundaries.

7. Give an example of a location on Earth where each type of convergent plate boundaries occur.
A: Divergent boundaries are found at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Convergent boundaries are found at at the Himalayas. Transform boundaries are found in California at the San Andreas Fault zone.

8. Explain what plate tectonics and ocean trenches have in common?
(Recommended link for questions 4-8) Plate boundaries
A: In both plate tectonics and ocean trenches convergent boundaries went under each other.

9. How old are the rocks off the east coast of North America relative to the rocks right along the mid atlantic ridge, why do you think this is the case?
(Recommended link for question 9) Sea-floot spreading
A: They're over 4.6 billion years old. This is because those rocks and the Earth are the same age.

10. What is a convection current or cell, describe how it works (use a picture if you want)?
A:It's when there is a substantial difference in temperatures and the heat rises, while the cold sinks. http://education-portal.com/academy/lesson/what-are-convection-currents-def...

11. What are the two main sources of heat inside the Earth?
(Recommended link for questions 10-11) Convection
A: The two main sources of heat are residual heat and radioactive decay.

12. What types of tectonic forces create mountains?
A: Convergent Boundaries cause mountains. When two or more land masses collide, the crust forms together into a mountain. http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/earth/the-dynamic-earth/plate...

13. What are horsts and grabens, and where can they be found?
A: These are fault blocks. Grabens are the block that sank, and horsts are the blocks that rose; you can find these in Nevada and Utah. http://www.answers.com/Q/How_were_the_mountains_across_Nevada_and_Utah_form...

14. Describe how the mountains across the Utah and Nevada were formed?
(Recommended link for questions 12-14) Mountain building
A: Two land pieces split apart causes horsts and grabens. This caused the mountains in Nevada and Utah. http://www.answers.com/Q/How_were_the_mountains_across_Nevada_and_Utah_form...

15. What are two bad things that can happen as a result of plate tectonics, how did plate tectonics cause these events?
A: Plate tectonics cause earthquakes and volcanoes by convergent boundaries and divergent boundaries.

16. What are three good things that plate tectonics provide for humans, how do plate tectonics provide these things?
(Recommended link for questions 15-16) Humans and Plate Tectonics
A: Plate tectonics make fertile soil, fossil fuels, and ore deposits. The constant change in land provide a way for nutrients in soil to spread; fossil fuels are made by the pressure caused by the Earth's movement; ore deposits are created by the gaps made by divergent boundaries.
