PLESSY VS. FERGUSON(1896)

Homer Plessy was an African American who sat in the "white" rail car and got caught and was sent to court in the Plessy Vs. Ferguson case.

Fact #1
Homer Plessy was jailed for sitting in the "white" rail car.

Fact #2
Plessy was considered black, but could easily pass as white, but under Louisiana law he was black.

Fact #3
Plessy was arrested and and the case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Fact #4
Plessy's lawyer argued that the Separate Car Act violated the thirteenth and fourteenth amendment.

Many judges argued that that separate facilities for blacks and whites were constitutional as long as they were equal.

Afterward the "separate but equal" statement covered many more areas of life, restaurants, theaters, restrooms and schools.

Then Vs. Now

  • In most places segregation does not occur
  • Both races, and all races are now created equal under law
  • Segregation is not continued in restaurants, restrooms, schools, etc.
  • Wilcox High School had a segregated prom until 2013

Did you know?
From 1861 to 1935, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the Capitol's Old Senate Chamber.
