PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLUTO AND CHARON

BY: SCOTTIE SHERIDAN ANS MASON CAIN

CHARON

  • It is about half the diameter of Pluto and about eight times less massive. .
  • New observations put Charon's diameter at between 750 and 753 miles.
  • Charon is over 1000 times smaller than Earth
  • Charon has very large amount of ice
  • It is usually 212 degrees Farenheit and has no atmosphere

COMPOSITION

  • Based on its density (2gm/cm) it is estimated that Pluto is made of 70% rock +30% ice water.
  • Pluto's atmosphere is nitrogen, ethane, methane, and carbon monoxide.
  • When far away these gases are frozen into ice and can be seen as bright spots in this picture.
  • Size: Pluto's diameter is 2274 km with a mass of 1.27^22 kg.

TECTONIC ACTIVITY

  • The inside of Pluto is warm and there may be enough energy in the core for movement.
  • This type of interior motion has indicators on the surface of th planet.
  • Surface plate tectonics that are related to earthquakes are big clues about motions within the Earth)
  • These clues are important to search for now, because the surface of Pluto may still be exposed.

FORMATION

  • Pluto and Charon were thought to have come togeather and collided in a similar way that we believe earths moon collided with earth.
  • And reformed to form the moon

SUSTAINABILITY FOR LIFE

  • you can't live on Charon because there's no atmosphere and is only half the size of Pluto which is much much smaller than our own earth.
  • With temperatures close to -380 degrees Fahrenheit, Pluto is incapable of nurturing

DISCOVERY/ EXPLORATION

  • pluto was discovered by the Lowell observatory in 1916 after lowell's death and his prediction of a Planet X
  • Choron was discovered in 1978 at the us navy observatory
