Rhyming Couplets

Make that chili nice and hot Cook it in a Texas pot

FREE VERSE
A snowy day is white A snowy day is snowmen
and snow angels A snowy day is sledding A snowy day is made of icy, fluffy joy

Written without rhyme, rhythm, or specific structure. Is very conversational - sounds like someone talking with you. Some do not use punctuation, capitalization, or other rules of grammar. Even though free, this kind of verse requires careful use of words and imagery in order to express ideas effectively.

SIMILE
Over my head the clouds thicken, then crack in split like a roar of cannonballs tumbling down a marble staircase

A comparison of two things using "like" or "as". Usually comparing 2 unlike things.

Metaphor
The wind is now a roaring, smashing, monster of destruction, raking all man's work from the valleys

A form of figurative language in which things are compared by stating one thing is another. "Like" and "as" are not used.

Personification

The tires gripped the road as if clinging to life

Personification is the giving of human qualities to an animal or an inanimate object.

It was steaming hot
It was too hot to go on a trot
I needed something to stay cool
So I decided to go to the pool
