POETRY
A type of writing in which words are chosen and arranged to create a strong image

PROSE
Writing that uses sentences and paragraphs

LINES
rows of words that do not follow the same rules of capitalization and punctuation

STANZAS
a group of lines set apart by spaces like paragraphs in another text

Rhyme
Ends in a similar sound

Rhyme scheme
In which the last words of certain lines follow a clear rhyming pattern

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Used to compare a person place thing or idea to something the reader is already familiar with

SIMILE
Is a comparison that uses the term like or as to show a connection

METAPHOR
Is a direct comparison between two things

ANALOGY
Is an extended comparison between two different things

PERSONIFICATION
Using human qualities to describe nonhuman things

ALLUSION
A reference to another person, place, thing, or text

SYMBOLISM
The use of one object or idea to signify something else

POINT OF VIEW
Is the position or outlook from which the speaker tells a story or observes something

THEME
Is a message or universal understanding that a poem explores

TONE
Refers to the speakers (or poets) attitude toward the subject

RHYTHM
Is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

METER
Is a recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables

REPETITION
Is the repeating of words or lines in poetry

ALLITERATION
Is the repetition of an initial constant sound

ASSONANCE
Repetition of a vowel sound

ONOMATOPOEIA
Is the use of words whose meaning is suggested by their sounds

BALLAD
A poem that tells a story using stanzas of 2-4 lines and a refrain

FREE VERSE
A poem that dose not follow any set rules of rhythm or rhyme

HAIKU
A very short poem with three lines and just 17 syllables; dose not rhyme and is usually about nature

LIMERICK
A short poem with 5 lines and a regular meter and rhyme scheme

LYRIC POEM
A short poem focused on the speakers thoughts or feelings

ODE
A poem that includes 2 or more stanzas with similar structures

SONNET
A poem that has 14 lines with 10-12 syllables per line

DENOTATIONS
Are the dictionary definitions of words

CONNOTATIONS
Are meanings suggested or implied by a word, separate from its definition
