Standard Definitions of Poetry:

  • Poetry is a form of literature
  • Poetry attempts to stir a reader's imagination and emotions by arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.
  • All forms of poetry are more creative and flowing than prose, even free verse.

Nothing to see here!

Rhyming Couplet:
If I could teach you how to fly,
Or bake an elderberry pie

A rhyming couplet is a set of two lines that have rhyming words at the end of them.

My imagination hatches
In the dandelion patches

Free Verse:
Litany
It might interest you to know,
speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world,
That I am the sound of the rain on the roof.

I also happen to be the shooting star,
the evening paper blowing down an alley
and the basket of chestnuts on the kitchen table.

-Billy Collins

Free verse is a kind of poem written without rhythm, rhymes, or specific structure.

Tonight the moon is a cracker,
with a bite out of it
floating in the night,

and in a week or so
according to the calendar
it will probably look

like a silver football,
and nine, maybe ten days ago
it reminded me of a thin bright claw.

Simile:
A sapphire shines as blue as heaven.

A simile is a poetic comparison that uses the words "like" or "as."

A ruby red as blood

A blackbird black as coal

The sunset is as pretty as heaven

The water sparkled like a thousand diamonds

Metaphor:
Hold fast to dreams
for if dreams die
Life is a broken winged bird
who cannot fly

A metaphor is a poetic comparison in which one thing is said to be another.

The lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Psalms 23:1

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life.
Proverbs 13: 14

The brooks laugh louder when I come.

Personification:
Personification is the giving of human or lifelike characteristics to an inanimate object or an animal.

that play at bo-peep

Lottie is a dog
She is so sweet
She sleeps like a log
But will wake up to eat

Lottie is my puppy
she likes to slumber all day
Sometimes she watches Bubble guppies
when we are away

Friends of Lottie
are also cute
one of them is Dottie
Oh, no! She played too long today, I hope she won't puke!

Lottie, Lottie, oh, so sloppy,
How are your ears so floppy?

Stanzas, Rhyming Couplets, and Rhyme schemes.
