A Polder is a piece of land reclaimed from the sea. It is used for new living space and farmland.

Polders are predominantly known for their use in Netherlands.

There have been many polders in the past such as Beemster (1609-1612), Schermer (1633-1635) and Haarlemmermeerpolder (1832)

But from 1930 onwards, the Zuiderzee Works were used to create polders. It was the biggest hydraulic engineering project undertaken by the Netherlands in the twentieth century.

Some of which are Wieringermeerpolder (1930), Noordoostpolder (1942) and Flevopolder (1956-1966)

All of the polders are perfectly planned, including the size, settlements and the dykes (natural barriers used to stop flooding)

Settlement on the polders is in a planned radial pattern. This means a large town is built in the center of the polder, which then provides all the services needed for the surrounding settlements.

Polders are still being built to this day, so look out for some in the future.
