INTRODUCTION

  • Police brutality is a very big part of corruption in the justice system. Many people do not like to discuss or acknowledge that police brutality even exists. The topic of police brutality makes some people uncomfortable because, many people do not want to believe that the same police officers who are supposed to protect us could be capable of willfully harming us. Police brutality has predominantly affected the black community in North America because sadly there are so many stereotypes that make black people sound dangerous therefore instilling racism into certain officers depending on how they take it. Today I will be talking about what police brutality is, why it happens, where it usually occurs, victims, and how we can prevent police brutality from happening.

DEFINITION

Of Police Brutality

Police brutality is the use of unnecessary force against a civilian to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Police brutality is also when a police officer abuses his or her power to control a civilian. Police brutality is also an extremity that police use when scared or feel threatened.

WHY POLICE BRUTALITY OCCURS

Like I said before, police brutality usually occurs when a police officer feels threatened by the victims even though they might have the upper hand. Police brutality happens because often police officers are trained to stop and kill in dangerous situations if they feel threatened, thereby instilling abusive and reckless practices even in a none dangerous situation.

Although police brutality is growing in numbers, not all police officers are bad apples. Many police officers are great at doing their jobs and continue to make the world a better place. The police officers I'm talking about today, are the ones that think they are above the law and can get away with anything like police brutality or abusing their power to feel in control.

STATISTICS

Here are some videos to help describe what police brutality is, what it looks like, and just about police brutality in general.

A few victims of police brutality that are most known around the world are, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner.

Sandra Bland was a 29 year old mother, sister and daughter. She was pulled over for a traffic stop and wrongfully asked to get out of her car for not putting her cigarette out. The officer then attacked her and arrested her, she later died in jail. The officer did not face any charges. Although Sandra had been a victim of police brutality, officials are still looking into the situation trying to find out how she died.

Micheal brown was a 18 year old boy who was shot and killed in an alteration with the police. Michael Was unarmed and witnesses claim that he had his hands up when the police officer shot and killed him. Although many of the facts around this case are have been questioned there is one fact that remains undeniable which is that regardless of the circumstances he was unarmed when shot.

ERIC GARNER

Eric Garner was a 43 year old father and grandfather who was killed by officers during his arrest, caused by a chock hole, compression of the chest against the ground, and health issues. Eric garner was being arrested because the officers thought he was selling illegal cigarettes. The officers did not face any charges.

HOW WE CAN PREVENT

Police Brutality

Police brutality sadly will probably always be around whether it's on purpose or by accident, but if we put certain laws in place maybe it could reduce how many people are terrorized, brutalized and killed because of police brutality. For instance if there is a law in place that states putting someone into a choke hole is illegal and an officer uses a choke hole they should have the same consequences as a civilian.

We could also train the police officers to use non lethal weapons like rubber bullets, and tasers (used wisely of course) instead of guns. We could also train the officers to try and calm the situation down and if it escalates then we teach them how to put their fears behind them and defend themselves without using excessive or deadly force.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, police brutality is something that shouldn't be so common around the world. Although police brutality occurs all around the world, you will mostly hear about in the U.S.A. When someone is wrongfully killed by police it causes outrage. Riots start, protests, and too much emotional damage. Police brutality is a terrible thing that I would never wish upon anyone.

Like I said before not all police officers are bad and think they are above the law, it is all in the officers personality and how they portray people in general. I personally wished that the police departments would take the rotten apples out of the pack before the rest turn rotten as well. I hope this presentation helped make you recognize that police brutality is a real thing and if you didn't know what police brutality is before, well now you know.

THANK YOU🦄
