  • The pathogen I chose was polio virus

HISTORY OF POLIO

  • On June 17, 1894 The scientist Michael Underwood was the first person to describe polio
  • It first appeared in Europe and the United States around the 1900s

MORE HISTORY OF POLIO

  • The number of people effected by this disease worldwide each year is about 60 cases
  • The mortality rate is 2%-5% in children and 15% - 30% in adults
  • The incubation period is commonly 6-20 days with a 3- 35 day range

WAYS TO KEEP SAFE

  • The way polio is transmitted is though person- to- person contact
  • Most people have no symptoms or very mild and some go unrecognized
  • There is no cure but there is treatment

  • Theodore Roosevelt got polio in 1921
  • Salk the inventor of the vaccine to kill polio first tested him and his family
  • Jonas Salk invented the vaccine
  • Polio is being tested to treat cancer
  • In 1952 the worst recorded epidemic 3,145 people died including 1,873 children in the United States died from polio
