Pompeii History

• Pompeii was a city that was very close to the volcano of Mount Visuvious.
• The most famous erruption of Mount Visuvious was in the year 79 A.D.
• When this volcano errupted, all citizens of Pompeii were burried in ash.

Day of Eruption

• The scorching hot volcanic ash that covered the land went so high up that people from hundreds of miles away could see it.
• About 2,000 people died and they were all preserved in ash casts.

Discovery

• Pompeii was left mostly alone until 1748 when archaeologists looking for artifacts found that the ash had perfectly preserved the humans where they died, buildings how they were buried, and even some jars that were preserving food items.

Pompeii Today

• Now, Pompeii has been pretty much fully discovered and has now turned into a major tourist attraction
• The excavation has been going on for three centuries
• 2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii every year

Pompeii People

• The people that lived in Pompeii were Romans
• Pompeii was a vacation home for Romans because the area was sunny and nice

Latest Research

• A group of archaeologists, restorers, radiologists, anthropologists have created a scanner that is used to find out what is inside of the molds.
• Most believe that those who died were older, younger, and pregnant people. They believed this because it seemed like these people were not fast runners but now some people want to see if this is really true

Teeth Conditions

• One consistence among all of the victims so far is that they all have had their teeth.
• This finding showed that the victims had low sugar diet and that the wear on the teeth showed that they were probably used for cutting.

Assumptions

• These scans are also showing that with one cast known as "The Pregnant Woman" showed that this person was probably not pregnant and may not have been a woman at all.
