PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HELLO

Good morning, my name is Justine Baltazar I am a 5th grade student at the pkyonge development research school . Today I'm going to talk about ponce de León and my definition of an explorer.

PONCE DE LEÓN

According to my research ,Ponce de Leon is a Spanish explorer who discovers new lands for his country, Spain .

He was the first European to discover a colony which is now known as Puerto Rico.

He was also the govenor of Puerto Rico but not long after he was replaced .

Ponce de Leon discovered the Gulf Stream and he was also the first European to set foot in Florida .

One fact that I found interesting was that ponce heard about the fountain of youth.

According to the legend , the fountain of youth was a stream that could make an old person young again by drinking from or bathing in its magical waters .

Historians believe that the natives just told ponce about the fountain of youth so he could leave their land because at that time ponce wanted to takeover the natives land and the navies weren't so happy about that .

HIS LIFE

He grew up in a noble family.

So ponce de Leon grew up learning military tactics and skills.

Soon he became a soldier and fought in the Spanish campaign against moor in Granada.

After the war ponce joined Christopher Columbus's second expedition to the new world in 1493.

Nearly a decade later ponce de Leon received permission from the Spanish king to go on an expedition to San Juan Bautista .

Then ponce and his crew sailed up off the coast and built new settlement but one day the Indians came by surprise and attacked .

Ponce was left seriously wounded and was pierced in the thigh by an arrow and died in 1521.

And just so you know this is a picture of ponce de Leon's monument in st. Augustine .

It was placed there because historians say that he made a landfall there and it is a replica of the older statue in San Juan .

WHY

I CHOSE PONCE DE LEON TO RESEARCH ABOUT
I chose ponce because I thought he was really special and interesting because of the things he did such as discovering Puerto Rico and also discovering Florida as a European .

MY DEFINITION

OF AN EXPLORER
An explorer is a person who discovers new things and who also has a very strong thirst for power .

An explorer is a person who discovers new things and who also has a strong thirst for power .

This is my definition and now I'm going to explain why ponce de Leon fits my definition.

Ponce de Leon discovered Puerto Rico and become governor but not long after he was replaced by Diego Columbus which is the son of Christopher Columbus.

So ponce de leon wanted to regain power after he was replaced by Diego Columbus.

Thats one example why he fits my definition.

Another example is that ponce discovered a land covered with tropical flowers, butterflies and birds.

Ponce de Leon claimed the land for Spain and named it La Florida, which is Spanish for the flowered one.

HOW I CREATED THE DEFINITION

Well, first I read a couple articles about different early explorers and their stories and adventures they went on and I noticed what they all had in common.

Most of the early explorers discovered new lands such as places we live in right now or have visited in the past .

I also noticed that they were really power hungry . So that's how I created my definition.

WHY

IS STUDYING THESE EXPLORERS IMPORTANT
Studying these explorers are important because we need to know where we came from and how our land was discovered .

This is important because if not for them we probably wouldn't even be here today .

So we have to appreciate the explorers for what they have done.

How going into middle school is just like being an explorer

Going into middle school is like being an explorer .

We're going to be in a different environment with new , different people and different things were going to learn .

It's going to be a big step because we're going to be more independent and we won't always have a partner to help guide you or a teacher that is always there for you whenever you need help .

So going into middle school is basically like being an explorer just like ponce de Leon.

Going through tough times, happy times and even great , unforgettable memories that I'll for sure never forget.

REFLECTION

In this project I learned a lot more about where I came from. I learned more about early explorers and their adventures they went on .

But as a learner I think I did really well on presentation wise for example , I think I did really well with planning out all my slides with my titles and pictures .

I would also like to improve on making some of my slides just stronger with a little more evidence to strengthen and support it even more.

SOURCES

This article gave me a lot of really good information that really helped me through out the process of making this project.

So I mainly used this article.

This article included timelines, fun facts , and text that was in order from the early years of his life to when he died .
