What is a Pond?

  • A pond is a body of still, freshwater
  • Ponds are different than lakes, because they are usually more shallow

Amphibians live in ponds

  • Amphibians are vertebrates that can live in an out of water
  • Frogs and toads are amphibians that live in ponds

Frogs

  • Frogs have an interesting life cycle
  • They begin as tadpoles that live in water
  • Then they adapt, by growing feet and lungs allowing them to live on land

Plants

  • Plants get their food from a process called photosynthesis
  • During photosynthesis, plants use energy from the sun to make their own energy

Floating Plants

  • Floating plants are found on the surface of a pond
  • An example is a lily pad

Submerged Plants

  • Submerged plants are plants that grow at the bottom of the pond and cannot be seen on the surface of the water
  • An example is fanwort

Emergent Plants

  • Emergent plants grow on the bottom of a pond
  • The leaves can be seen from the water
  • These plants can also be seen on the shoreline
  • A cattail is an example of an emergent plant

Predators of the Pond

  • Many predators of the pond are birds
  • Herons and Hawks are pond predators

Common Insects of Ponds

  • Leeches
  • Dragonflies
  • Water Striders
