WHAT WAS SIGNIFICANT ABOUT HIS REIGN?

- HE WAS THE FIRST NON-ITALIAN POPE IN MORE THAN 450 YEARS.

SUCCESSES AND FAILURES

  • Firmly upheld traditional positions on matters like contraception, abortion,
  • divorce, the celibacy of priests, and impossibility of women's ordination.
  • The innovations of his New Code of Canon Law gave for more attention
  • to the duties and rights of lay people.

WHAT WAS THE PAPACY LIKE WHEN HE STARTED?

  • Upon becoming pope, he faced difficult situations throughout the church.
  • Dissent and difections had weakened Catholic life.
