On March 12, 1088, Odo was elected as Pope and took the name Pope Urban II.

Pope Urban II initiated the first Crusade in 1095 and changed history.

In 1095, Pope Urban was asked by the Byzantine Empire for military aid in its fight against ferocious Muslim armies. Urban seized the opportunity and toured many cities in Europe giving speeches which put groups of people of all classes into a religious frenzy.

On November 27, 1095, Pope ll made a speech of the Middle Ages, giving rise to the Crusades by calling all Christians in Europe to war against Muslims to reclaim holy land with a cry of "God wills it"

The Christian Crusaders killed everyone inside the cites they captured during the First Crusade. The Knights had no way in determining Christians from Jews and Muslims so during the attacks the officers would just yell "kill them all"

Pope Urban II died on
July 29, 1099, 2 weeks after the fall of Jerusalem.
