POPE URBAN II

EARLY LIFE

  • Born in 1035 to a knightly family.
  • Was educated at a school associated with the reims cathedral.
  • Worked in Germany as a papal legate.
  • He tried his best to support pope gregory VII.

POPE ELECTION

  • Was elected pope march 12, 1088
  • His main goal was to rally against simony.
  • He applied his state craft to weakening support for his rivals.

THE FIRST CRUSADE

  • The seljuk turks were killing the byzantine army.
  • They had taken constanople and gerusalm.
  • Urban wanted to free the holy lands from the muslims.
  • He proposed an army of 50,000 to free the holy lands.
  • In 1095 urban preached a stirring sermin about crusade.

"A horrible tale has gone forth, an accursed race utterly alienated form god...has invaded the land of the Christians and depopulated them by the sword, plundering, and fire...tear the land from the wicked race and subject it to yourselves

RESPONSE

  • The people then began shouting " deus vult."
  • This means god wills it.
  • Deus vult eventually became the battle cry of the crusades.

RESULTS

  • After the first crusade, Jerusalem was freed.
  • Afterward their were 7 more crusades.
  • The crusades led to success qnd the had freed the holy lands.
