PRESENTATION OUTLINE

POTASSIUM

  • Electron configuration:1s2_2s2_2p6_3p2_3p6_4s1.
  • Its density is 0.89 g/cm3
  • Potassium is a Alkali metal meaning it is very reactive
  • It contains two stable "happy" isotopes
  • at 25 degrees celcius is a solid.

POTASSIUM IN FOODS

  • Potasssium if found in a variety of foods such as bananas, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
  • Sweet potatoes contain approximately 694 MGs of potassium.
  • A quarter cup of tomato sause has 664 MGs of potassium.
  • Beet greens contain 644 MGs of potassium per half cup.
  • Clams carry 534 MGs of potassium per 3 ounces and also has the highest vitamin B12 concentration of any food.

FUN FACTS:)

  • Potassium prevents stroke.
  • Its also aids in lowering systolic blood pressure.
  • Potassium chloride is one of the most common potassium compounds. It is used In fertilizers.
  • Potassium hydroxide is used to make soaps, detergent, and drain cleaners
  • Potassium is also the seventh most abundant metal in the earth's crust.

DISCOVERY OF POTASSIUM

  • Potassium was first purified in 1807 by Sir Humphry Davy. Potassium was the first metal to be isolated using electrolysis(a chemical breakdown produced by a solution that contains ions.)
  • Potassium is used for treating and preventing low potassium levels.
  • Consuming too much potassium is not safe and has many consequences.
  • It can cause paralysis, irregular heart Rhythm, mental confusion and even death.

  • It reacts the most with water to for hydrogen gas and releases lots of energy.
