Daily Life

  • The women cooked and prepared meals, made beadwork , and taught the girl children the ways of the Powhatan woman
  • The men brought along their sons while hunting and fishing, teaching them differnt skills
  • The elders stayed home and played and told storys to the children sometimes

Housing

  • Powhatans lived in small round houses called wigwams. These wigwams were 8-10 feet tall, bult by wooden frames covered in birchbark and animal furs.
  • Wigwams were stable houses that suited the Powhatan poeple because they didnt move alot
  • Every year in winter they rebuilt a new house to start camp fresh

Food

  • The powhatans were farming and hunting people
  • They ate deer,fish,corn,nuts,wild roots, and berries
  • Vegstables and fruits

Clothing

  • Women wore knee high fringed skirts and fringed deer skin leather shirts
  • Men wore breecloths, leggings and deer skin shirts
  • Both wore turkey feathers, beading typed things, earings and moccassins

Spiritual Beliefs and Traditions

  • Believed in "Ahone" and " Okeus" , both gods
  • Christian missionaries arrived earlier to the Powhatan tribe, influencing their culture
  • Ahone was equated with the most common christian god
  • When a corpse died, the courpse was wrapped in mats and burried
  • After a childs' birth, the parents gave a feast to celebrate with the family

Transportation

  • They built canoes out of carved out trees
  • They would sometimes take baskets and walk to collect food
