WHAT ARE THE 5 PRECEPTS?

  • The Precepts are absolute minimum actions required of Catholics regarding the Church.
  • The Church uses these Precepts to remind us how to live a good Christian life.
  • Each of the precepts are requirements.
  • There are 5 precepts and one is broken, then it is known as a mortal sin.
  • Together with the 10 commandments; they represent the minimum level of moral living.

FIRST PRECEPT

  • You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.
  • We must "sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord".
  • Throughout our lives we all already know to go to mass but now we know its a precept.
  • It requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating important days of the Church

SECOND PRECEPT

  • "You shall confess your sins at least once a year."
  • In order to receive any sacrament we need to go to confession.
  • Confirmation is "continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness."
  • If we don't go to confession God will not forgive us.

THIRD PRECEPT

  • You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season
  • Since Jesus sacrificed himself on this day, the lest we can do is receive his body.
  • If someone does not go; then it's considered a mortal sin.
  • Guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts.

FOURTH PRECPT

  • You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church.
  • Whenever there is a day of fasting or abstinence he/she must obey.
  • Yes, it is hard to do this but we are doing it for Jesus.
  • It ensure time of self - control and penance,
  • Also prepares s for the liturgical feast

FIFTH PRECEPT

  • You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church
  • Time, talent. and treasure is a good way to remember.
  • Everything we do is for The Lord, so why not give back.
  • The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church.
  • Someone give 10% of what he makes in a month.

FASTING

  • Fasting is a sign of Repentance
  • Means reducing the amount of food you eat below normal levels.
  • On fast days you may eat one full meal and two smaller meals.
  • Fasting reminds us of Jesus in those 40 days in the desert,

ABSTINENCE

  • Abstinence means not eating meat.
  • All Catholics 14 and older are required to observe abstinence on specific days
  • Days are: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays in Lent.
