PRENATAL CARE

WHAT IS PRENATAL CARE?

  • It's the medical & nursing care before & during pregnancy
  • This is important because it reduces the chances to have serious problems
  • A mother should start before pregnancy to set the future for the baby

NUTRITION AND EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY

  • A mother gains 30lbs within 9 months of pregnancy
  • She should have a nutritous foods like lean fish, fruits, vegetables, etc
  • Excercises that she could do are yoga, jog, stretches, walks, etc
  • Exercises that she shouldn't do are running relays, climb, etc

FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME

  • Causes your baby to have nervous system problems,
  • Have deformed facial features (long upper lip, etc),
  • Have mental retardation problems,
  • Children have attention deficits, poor judgements, etc,
  • Midline structures of the face and brain are deficit

DANGERS OF SMOKING

  • Pregnant women should never smoke
  • Talk to your doctor if you've smoked before
  • Effects include:
  • Breathing difficulties, low birth weight, stress, and is able to get SIDs

ILLEGAL DRUG USE

  • Smoking makes a higher percentage of having a miscarriage
  • The placenta can separate from the womb and may cause bleeding
  • Cause prmature birth, SIDs, and cleft lip
  • Causes the baby to have hypertension, jitters, excess crying, respiratory issues

  • Cost for normal delivery is $3,500
  • Cost for c-section is $4,000

  • Pro: able to handle emergencies that arise during birth
  • Pro: women can take pain relievers during labor
  • Con: don't have the "home" feeling

  • Pro: more home-like than hospital
  • Pro: allows water births
  • Con: women shouldn't try this if they're at high risk
