Where should you store a boat?
Several possibilities are available to you to allow your boat to spend the winter in good conditions. These include:
In your garage: This is of course the cheapest solution, but you still need to have enough room in the space. Depending on whether you store it indoors or outdoors, the preparation for long-term storage will be more or less demanding.
Afloat: Another option is to leave your boat in the water. However, this solution requires careful preparation because, between the risk of damaging exposure to the elements and strong winds, security might not be the best.
In specialized storage facility: A good option is to keep your boat stored in a specialized boat storage facility. These offer the best protection for your boat, both in terms of security and controlled conditions that make sure your vessel is safe from damage or deterioration.
Some facilities such as this one in boat storage in Lake Havasu offer detailing services, fuel services, towing services and access to certified technicians.
Preparing your boat for storage
For the inside of the boat perform the following steps:
• Thoroughly clean the floors and upholstery, and dry them well. Consider using eco-friendly cleaning agents. After cleaning, remember to wipe everything dry.
• Empty and clean the refrigerator. Switch off the gas cylinder and take it out. Take the opportunity to check the condition of his hose.
• Remove portable electronic equipment such as cameras.
• Remove the batteries and put them away. Remember to recharge them from time to time.
For the exterior of the boat, make sure to do the following:
• Wash decks, windows and portholes.
• Check the general condition of the main components. Grease and/or lubricate gaskets, valves, locks, cleats, and all metal parts.
Keep in mind that the use of tarpaulin protects your boat from the elements and dust. However, it can encourage the buildup of moisture. If you use one, make sure that air can circulate to prevent mold growth.
