His Life

  • He was one of the nine children of a Presbyterian minister.
  • He was born in Pennsylvania in 1837.
  • He was raised in up state New York as a lawyer in Buffalo.

Presidential life

  • He did not want to eat fancy he once wrote this to his friend ' I must go to diner but I wish it was to eat a pickled herring A Swiss cheese and a chop at Louis' instead of the French stuff I shall find.'
  • He won the election by the votes of democrats and reformer republicans "Mugwumps".
