  • Born November 2, 1975 in Pineville, NC
  • Died June 15, 1849 in Nashville, TN
  • Home state is Mecklenburg, North Carolina
  • 9th Governor of United States
  • 1812- joined Tennessee militia, captain & colonel

ELECTION

  • James K. Polk was elected in May 27, 1844
  • In office March 4, 1845
  • He was a Democrat
  • Defeated many, mainly Clay & Birney

EVENTS

  • Since 1818 the U.K and U.S controlled Oregon
  • U.S suggested to settle it on 49th parallel; rejected both times
  • Polk broke off negotiation and said "54-40 or fight!"
  • Made Oregon Treaty
  • 1846 divided Oregon Country along 49th parallel
