BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF PRINCE HENRY THE NAVIGATOR

Although he was called prince Henry the Navigator, he never sailed on any of the voyages he sponsored. Instead, he established a school for the study of navigation, mapmaking, and shipbuilding. This allowed sailors to guide their ships better and come up with new designs. Prince Henry started the search of the West African coast. Thanks to his efforts, by 1460 the Portuguese had explored the coast of Africa all the way to Sierra Leon.

REASON FOR EXPEDITIONS

REASON FOR EXPEDITIONS

The expeditions of Prince Henry were developed to create maps of the West African Coast that were greatly needed. In addition, the expeditions helped defeat the biggest enemies of the Portuguese, the Muslims. It also helped spread Christianity and establish trade routes. Most importantly, the expeditions helped determine how far enemy Muslim lands extended to the south, and to search for the legendary Christian empire of the priest-king Prester John. It was discovered that he didn't really exist.

PROBLEMS OF THE EXPEDITIONS

  • The second group made it to Guinea coast but were thrown off course.
  • Cape Bojador was a treacherous route, and no Europeans had ever returned home alive. The ocean beyond was often called the ""Sea of Darkness"". Most sailors refused to attempt the route.
