Every citizen has certain basic rights that the state cannot take away 

Federalism

Power is divided between the central government and the individual state

Independent Judiciary

Judicial independence is the concept that the judiciary needs to be kept away from the other branches of government.

Rule Of Law

The people of & their government must abide by a set of laws.

Popular Sovereignty

 is the principle that the authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its people

Separation of powers

Powers & responsibilites are divdied among 3 government branches to prevent overuse of power
