Symmetrical- Formal type of balance; achieved by placing identical objects on either side of central point. Ex: The butterfly's wings are equal to the body.
Asymmetrical- Informal type of balance; achieved by placing diff. objects on either side equally. Ex:This woman's hair is equal but really isn't. One side is shorter and the other longer.
Harmony- Achieved through variety and unity. Must look like they belong together. Ex: The flowers look good with the branch, therefore they belong together.
Unity- Refers to a sense that everything of work belongs there, and makes a whole piece. Ex: The quilt is different pieces put together as one with the same balance all around.
