Principles of Design- the consideration and arrangement of formal elements in a work of art. An artists expression,or composition, consisting of alignment, repetition, contrast, balance, proximity and space.

Alignment- something arranged in a straight line.

The alignment of the horizon and the borders of the picture create an interesting effect.

Repetition- repeating of and object in the Photograph more then once.

The repetition of tree trunks make a creative focus point for the viewer.

Contrast- opposites attract. Use black and white, large and small.

This piece uses contrast to draw attention to the dark elements of the piece.

Balance- an equality between the two sides of the photo

The balance of this piece is created from the symmetry of the building.

Proximity- the distance of the camera to the subject.

The proximity of the camera entitles the viewer to focus on the leaves rather then background elements.

Space- unoccupied area between the components of the piece.

Focused attention to the city and its lights is a result of the unoccupied space in the sky.
