Arrival

Once the officer arrives he finds the victim on the porch with a bruised face and ripped dress.  Clearly an incident occurred.
The victim claims to have tripped on a table. But you've seen this before. It's clearly a wife covering up for her partner who has done this to her. Inside the house, you look at he table and see that the bruises are not consistent with the table.

When you look over to question the accused, the husband is a colleague of yours in your division. He works on another team but you know him well. Your heart sinks.

You are faced with a major dilemma.

You are faced with a major dilemma.

The accused claims that alcohol consumption by the wife drove him to it.

You review the  scene in your mind

The neighbour called in the complaint.
The wife is hurt and fearful.
The husband claims that the wife started it by consuming too much alcohol.
There is no alcohol detected in the victim.
The table in which she claims to have tripped over could not bruise her face the way it is.
The husband is lying.
The wife is in denial.
The husband works in your division
You are up for promotion
The Captain would like to see authority taken place
If I charge the accused, the entire department will hear about it
If I let him off, management will see that I'd save my own hide
The wife would feel defeated and live in fear and not have an ally
My peers would call me a snitch or worse
I could be blacklisted
