PRESENTATION OUTLINE

7 PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING

APPLICATION IN EARLY PRIMARY
This short presentation will outline the 7 principles of learning as outlined in the article "The Nature of Learning: Using research to Inspire Practice".

Principles will be explained with practical, real life examples in my early primary class.

THE 7 PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING

  • learners at the centre
  • Social nature of learning
  • Emotions are integral to learning
  • Recognizing individual differences
  • Stretching all students
  • Assessment for learning
  • Building horizontal connections
The 7 principles of learning are guides to help the development of learning in the 21st century.

Developed by looking at how people learn and the role emotions and motivation play in cognitive development.

ACTIVE EXPLORATION

LEARNERS AT THE CENTRE / THE SOCIAL NATURE OF LEARNING
Students are active in their learning. They are given opportunities to engage in the learning by exploring and making predictions and reflecting on the out come.

In this activity students worked with a partner to see which items floated and which sunk.

Stretch the learner: Can you make a piece of putty float?

Reflection: Students worked together to gather their data and come up with a solution to make their putty float.

CROSS CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS

BUILDING HORIZONTAL CONNECTIONS
There is an emphasis on horizontal connectedness. Connections are made across the learning environment, subjects and community.
Students were learning about the life cycle of plants. Students observed and took notes as their plant grew. Plants were sold to community members to raise money for a class field trip. New vocabulary was introduced throughout the unit.

INTERESTS AND MOTIVATION

RECOGNIZING INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
Learners have different abilities, prior knowledge, learning styles and motivation.

Students created designs using tangrams.

Stretching the learner: After exploring with block tangrams, students cut out tangrams to create animals to hang on the wall.

Students observed what other students created. Designs were captured digitally to document learning.
