The performaces coaches give to manipulate, tease, coax, flatter and bully best effort & achievements from athletes - clearly conform to accepted social rules
Engagement with social theories not only holds the potential for raising awareness and understanding, but provides opportunities for reflection and change
Coaching is regarded as a contested space where social thought and theory can serve to problematise taken-for-granted assumptions about knowledge and learning, for both athlete and coach
how do those with responsibility (teachers/coaches etc) use their power ethically to form productive relationships
Discourse: the unwritten rules that guide social practice and shape what can be perceived and understood. Discourses such as sports build character often go unchallenged despite many egs to the contrary
through analysing discourses it becomes possible to understand what shapes actions thoughts and how the making of choices is permitted within its own rules
