  • Focus on student led, long-term, interdisciplinary
  • Complex problems with challenging questions
  • Students must investigate, problem-solve, make decisions, innovate
  • Teacher is simply there for support, not as the center of instruction.
  • Study shows project based learning enhances the quality of learning and leads to higher cognitive development

  • Poses complex questions
  • Teacher's role: modeling, guiding, facilitating
  • Student Role: investigating, clarifying, expanding, leading themselves to discovery

  • Student Understanding is the primary focus

Socratic Questioning

Socratic Questioning

  • Primary Goal: students think critically about complex topics
  • teacher models at first, but then student-led
  • Rules: Stay on focused and on topic, clarify, do not interrupt, participate
  • "There is no one right answer"
  • 1. good open-ended question, 2. ask follow up question, 3. summarize and discuss all sides mentioned during original discussion
