Progressive learning is the educational focus on engaging students in real-world problem-solving activities.

In the Video, the Classroom

  • Was learning about Africa
  • Making masks of the animals they're studying about with Africa
  • Learning movements/dancing about aspects of Africa
  • Get to choose where they would like to sit
  • Will be doing a play/skit of the Lion King

I really like the idea of the kids learning about the real-life experiences and things that are happening in Africa, but is making it fun and hands-on for the students. The idea and connection of the masks and using them in their own production of the Lion King is a great way to get the kids interested and excited about the idea of learning about this foreign country.

In chapter 5 of the iBook, under the subsection Instruction in the Classroom, it states that a couple of key methods of teaching progressivism is through group work and the project method.
...

... In the video the first grade classroom is implementing both key methods. They are using group work to learn and help understand the ways and the cultures and the movements of Africa for their play about the Lion Kind and using the project method through the arts and crafts of mask making.
