Prohibition
Prohibition was a part of the United States history where the government banned all sale and manufacture of alcohol, the only ways that one could get alcohol was for medical purposes or illegally.

The National Prohibition Act was the 18th amendment otherwise known as The Volstead Act.

Four main reasons why prohibition started:
The first reason is that many doctors discovered what alcohol can do to your body and mind and they were looking to stop it.

The second reason was economically, many times when the people would come into work they would be drunk and not be able to preform there job which led to them being fired and that made the economy fail drastically.

The third reason was because of politics, certain candidates that were looking to take to office were often voted in because they would promise that they would vote against the prohibition law. When they were elected they rarely did what they said they would do.

The final reason was socially, many men with wives and children would often spend all of there night sitting at a bar or saloon, drinking. This led to argument and money problems which also led to many divorces.

During the time of prohibition many people would often break the law by making and selling alcohol illegally. The places where they would sell these would be hidden or underground bars so they wouldn't be caught. Many of these illegal bars where owned by gangs. The most famous gang whose leader's name was Al Capone owned the majority of the bars and made over 60 million dollars every year.

The names of these illegal bars were called speakeasies, they were given these names because to get in you would have to whisper a code word through a locked door.

Repeal
The repeal of prohibition happened in 1933. One of the reasons why prohibition was ended was because despite all of there efforts to keep alcohol away from the United States it still didn't work. It became more of a problem than it was before. Another reason is there was a lot more crimes happening since all of the gangs where fighting each other for control over bars and saloons.
Lastly, was because they did not have enough law enforcement to keep up with regular day things and trying to stop people from selling and making alcohol

We can see some of the results of prohibition still today. Some of these are: Stock car racing and family's that owned many speakeasies are still rich and powerful today.

Facts about Prohibition
During the time of Prohibition people would go on boats called " booze cruises." The ship would go out in to international waters where is would be legal to serve alcohol.

Supporters of Prohibition tried to have the Bible rewritten so it did not have any references to alcohol.

When Prohibition was repealed the first legal bottle of beer was produced at The Abner Drury and delivered to President Roosevelt at The White House.

After the repeal of the 18th Amendment President Roosevelt said, " What America needs now is a drink."
