PROHIBITION OF 1920

THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS

ROARING TWENTIES

  • In 1920, states all over America were making alcohol illegal.
  • The 18th Amendment, banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors.
  • US citizens were astonished by this law that illegals all alcohol.
  • Police would storm bars to get rid of alcohol and they even sometimes poured it down the drain.
  • Some people left their state and went to a different state that wasn't illegal to drink.

THE REVOLT

  • U.S. Citizens would start a revolt against the prohibition.
  • U.S. Citizens would smuggle in alcohol from other states that wasn't prohibited.
  • Secret hideouts/Bars were made for people who didn't want to go to another state for alcohol.
  • Codes/Passwords were given to drinkers and they used it as code to unlock the door to get in.
  • Some police would get word that there was a bar hidden somewhere in town.

FLAPPERS

  • Flappers were women that would drink, smoke and wear short skirts.
  • Flappers would usually start the rumors of secret bars and invite gentlemen they liked.
  • Not all women in the 1920's were Flappers but most of them were at the time.

THE ARREST RATE OF 1920-1930

  • The number of arrest went sky high during the Roaring Twenties.
