PROJECT ANALYSIS TOOLS

SWOT & LIKES/CONCERNS/WISHES
When beginning a project, it is important to remember the ADDIE model (analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate). The SWOT analysis and Likes, Concerns and Wishes are tools that can help you start to get a handle on the data, and to narrow your focus on a clear vision.

INTERNAL & EXTERNAL

COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ALL RESOURCES
It is important to take the time to gather good data in order to do a comprehensive analysis. Sometimes questions will arise that need further investigation to clarify the strength or importance of a resource.

This analysis tool allows you to see your strengths in relation to your weaknesses, and in relation to external opportunities and threats so you can better leverage your position and improve the chance that your change effort will succeed.

WEAKNESSES

OUTSOURCE OR FIND PARTNERS FOR
Identification of weaknesses, likewise, is not a listing of all the ways you are falling short. Rather, it allows you to see, in relation to the other elements of the analysis, ways you might be able to work around your competency gaps.

THREATS

BE AWARE OF
Healthy change necessitates a healthy amount of reality checking. If a planned change effort might run into competition from an existing program external to your organization or group, that might constitute a significant threat to the success of your efforts.

USE SWOT

DURING PROPOSAL STAGE OF STRATEGIC PLANNING
SWOT analysis helps to clarify and refine your planning. Waiting until too close to launch will increase anxiety, as important elements may well have been overlooked. When done early in the ADDIE process, it improve the project, or even change the plan and scope entirely.

  • Making decisions about execution of new policy
  • Identifying possible areas for program changes
  • Refining & redirecting efforts mid-plan

SERIOUS ISSUES SURFACE

WHEN INTERNAL WEAKNESS PAIRED WITH EXTERNAL THREAT
When all 4 elements of the SWOT analysis are completed, it is critical to put them all together and look for patterns and themes. In particular, significant alignment between internal weaknesses and external threats can be very useful to creating a healthy sense of urgency, or redefining the strategic plan significantly.

SUGARCOAT

RESIST THE URGE TO
Take the time to really dig down here. Gather good data. When executing a plan, you give power to those that show up. But not gathering data from the full set of stakeholders will limit your effectiveness.

LIKES, CONCERNS & WISHES

A SIMPLER TOOL FOR SIMPLER PROJECTS

Useful to have 3 sheets of newsprint and run through these quickly.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE?

Sheet one: since this is typically a brainstorm session, there may not be total consensus about what is "liked." Don't waste time getting bogged down here about unanimity.

WHAT CONCERNS YOU?

This can produce some thought-provoking items, and this way of asking allows worries to surface in a generally non-threatening way.

WHAT IS YOUR WISH?

This section will highlight how well you were able to dig down on the previous 2 elements. May be surprising, may be incredibly clarifying, may be blue-skying. That's why they are wishes. This section may also tell you a lot about your group, especially if you are just forming.
