Faith and Indigenous Knowledge Systems

Faith

Big Ideas:three definitions
Three definitions of Faith:
1: Faith associated with trust is placing faith in a person, a group or a supernatural being:God. People in different religions believe in different forms of God. they see him as a miracle worker

2:Taking on things with faith is accepting assumptions or appearances without further questioning for the moment. indigenous knowledge; shangaan medicine man in Nigeria. people go to him for spiritual, mental, and emotional healing, warding off witches. you cannot question them you simply believe and do what is asked of you.

3:Faith being subjective is either the belief that rejects the need for justification or a justification based on other justifications.

Vantage Points

Faith
Vantage Points:
- religion: sets up a system of beliefs for a group of people, as well as a system of morals.
-Pascal's Wager: Believing in god is a win-win situation: if he's real, you go to heaven(if you followed your beliefs guidelines), if he's not, nothing bad happens to you.
- Faith is also used as a trust/honor system for a group of people.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems

"The tooth of a person becomes the teeth of everybody"-cultural survivor.
UNESCO definition: indigenous knowledge is anything that is locally bound,non-formal, orally transmitted, dynamic and adaptive, holistic in nature, and closely related to survival. some also believe that when someone dies you have to shave your head or else it falls off.

IPCC: The term ‘indigenous knowledge’ is used to describe the knowledge systems developed by a community as opposed to the scientific knowledge that is generally referred to as ‘modern’ knowledge (Ajibade, 2003)

Flavier and Warren definition-Indigenous Knowledge systems: Knowledge that is unique to a given culture or society.

Intersections

1. indigenous knowledge can be seen as faith. Example being Hinduism known as traditional knowledge and it's also seen as a religion. The Indians have been trying to protect it for so long. Hinduism started as an indigenous knowledge before it became a religion or considered as a faith.

2. shanghaans (medicine men)are considered as a faith but also indigenous knowledge. as mentioned before people really believe in the spiritual world of these medicine men. They believe that every medicine has a purpose whether it's mental, physical or spiritual healing. This also goes into witchcraft and how people believe but this is something that westerners don't believe in. They are even scared of it.
