Most have a cell wall. Bacteria's is made of peptidoglycan.

Many have a capsule outside the cell wall for protection and to keep from drying out. This also helps it stick to surfaces.

Under stress, endospores may be formed.

Types of Prokaryotes

Air

• Obligate aerobes (M. tuberculosis)
• Obligate anaerobes (gangrene)
• Facultative anaerobic (Staph, E. coli)

Temperature

• Thermophiles
• Psychrophiles
• Mesophiles
