Propagation:

  • There are many ways to propagate plants
  • You can use seeds, branches, and even leaves to create more plants
  • We will be looking at poppies, forsythias, and African violets today

Propagation:

  • Poppies (Papaver orientale) can be propagated from seeds
  • The seeds are very small and need to be planted very shallowly

Propagation:

  • Poppies prefer a loamy or sandy soil and a sunny location
  • If you plant poppies after the last frost, you should see flowers in the summer

Propagation:

  • You can grow a new forsythia plant by using a process called layering
  • Layering is bending a long branch down to the ground and burying part of it in soil

Propagation:

  • You can speed up the process by scraping the area of the branch that will be buried
  • In 2 - 4 weeks, when new leaves emerge, your plant is ready to move

Propagation:

  • African violets are easy to propagate
  • All you need is a small glass of water and tinfoil

Propagation:

  • Put tinfoil on the top of the glass
  • Place cut leaves into the glass with stems immersed

Propagation:

  • In 2 - 4 weeks, you will see little leaves growing and roots at the base
  • You can then separate the plantlets and plant them in pots

Now you can grow your own plants
