PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MATTER

Anything that takes up space and has mass. All matter is made up of atoms.

ATOM

The smallest unit of a chemical element.

ELEMENT

Each element is made of only one kind of atom. There are about 120 elements. Ex: hydrogen H2, oxygen O2, carbon C

PERIODIC TABLE

A list of all the chemical elements that exist in the universe (that have been discovered by humans so far). Categorizing, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms.

MOLECULE

Formed when 2 or more atoms join together. These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms. Ex: water H2O, salt NaCI, oxygen O2

COMPOUND

Formed when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms are joined together. Note: all compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.

COEFFICIENT

Multiply the number of molecules you are making
2 H2 O has 4 atoms hydrogen and 2 atoms oxygen

SUBSCRIPTS

Tell you how many atoms of each element for that molecule

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Is the process by which plants make their own food

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

The process by which the cells of all living things break apart glucose to release energy
