PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PROPERTIES OF MATTER

MATTER

  • Anything that takes up space and has mass.
  • All matter is made up of atoms

ATOMS

  • The smallest units of a chemical element.

ELEMENT

  • Each element is made of only one kind of at one atoms.
  • There are about 120 elements.
  • Examples:
  • Hydrogen (H2)
  • Oxygen (O2)
  • Carbon (C)
  • Nitrogen (N2)
  • Iron (FE)
  • Aluminum (Al)
  • Gold (Au)
  • Calcium (Ca)

PERIODIC TABLE

  • A list of all of the chemical elements that exist in the universe. (That have been discovered by human so far.)

MOLECURE

  • Forced when 2 or more atoms join together.
  • Example:
  • Water( H2O
  • Salt (NaCI)
  • Sugar (C6H2O2)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)

COMPOUND

  • Forced when 2 or more Different atoms are joined together.
  • Note:
  • All compound are also molecules, but not all molecules are compound.
  • Example: of compounds.
  • (Co2)
  • (NaCI)
  • (H2O2)
  • Non Example:
  • (O2)
  • (H2)
  • Why aren't these compound?
  • Subscription tells you how many "atoms" of elements for that molecule.
  • Example:

SUBSCRIPT

  • Subscriptions tell you how many "atom" of each element for Molecule.
  • Example:
  • (H2)=2 atoms hydrogen
  • Examples:(H2O)= 2 atoms hydrogen, 1 atoms oxygen

COEFFICIENTS

  • Multiply the numbers of molecules you are making
  • Example:
  • 2 H2O= 4 atoms hydrogen, 2 atoms oxygen
