PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PROPERTIES OF WATER LAB

LUCY AND NICOLE (G)

CAPILLARY ACTION

  • Causes water to rise in a narrow tube against the force of gravity
  • Ex: draws water out of the roots of a plant and up into the stem & leaves
  • In this picture, the liquid is drawn from the full beaker to the empty one

SOLUTION

  • Components are evenly distributed & stay mixed

SUSPENSION

  • Mixtures of water & nondissolved material

ADHESION

  • An attraction between moleculesof different substances

DENSITY OF SOLID VS. LIQUID WATER

  • Solid water is ice (when frozen, it expands & decreases density)
  • Liquid water has a higher density than solid water.

SURFACE TENSION

  • The strong attraction between water molecules produces a force

COHESION

  • An attraction between molecules of the same substance

BREAKING OF SURFACE TENSION

  • It allows density to take over again
