AMINO ACIDS

  • Proteins are long chains of smaller "links"
  • that are bound together chemically
  • The smaller links are amino acids
  • Your digestive system breaks down proteins
  • into amino acids

ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS

  • Your body' proteins are made up of 20 amino acids
  • Proteins only supply 11 of the 20
  • The other nine must be supplied by your food
  • These nine are called essential animo acids
  • And like the name they are essential to your diet

COMPLETE AND INCOMPLETE PROTEINS

  • Complete proteins contain
  • all 9 amino acids
  • Incomplete proteins only
  • contain some of the
  • amino acids

PROTEINS FOR VEGETARIANS

  • Vegetarians can find protein
  • in beans and rice which provide
  • the essential amino acids
  • in your body

WHAT CONTAINS PROTEINS

  • Turkey and chicken, fish and cheese
  • Pork and lean beef, tofu, and beans
  • Yogurt, milk, and soy milk
  • And nuts and seeds

FUN FACTS

  • Proteins play a role for
  • growth and repair for body tissue
  • And 10-35% of your calories are proteins

FUN FACTS

  • Your proteins in your body are made up
  • of 20 different amino acids
  • Your diet has to supply 9 amino acids
  • These 9 amino acids are essential because
  • your body cannot produce them

REVIEW QUESTIONS

  • What is the definition of a protein
  • How many amino acids are in your body
  • How many animo acids do you supply by food
  • What is a complete protein
  • What percent of calories should come from proteins

ANSWERS

  • A nutrient containing nitrogen, carbon,
  • hydrogen, and oxygen. 2.) 20
  • 3.) 9 4.) Proteins that contain all nine essential
  • Animo acids, they come from animal source
  • for example meats and fish. 5.) 10 to 35%
