PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PROTISTA KINGDOM
Very Diverse Group
(Giant Kelp in background from Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. Kelp is multicellular and autotrophic.)

General Characteristics

  • All are Eukaryotes
  • Autotrophs, Heterotrophs or Both
  • Unicellular or Multicellular
  • Variety of Locomotions (movement): cilia, flagella, pseudopods (false feet)
  • Reproduce Asexually (most all)
  • Many live in freshwater; some on land
  • Animal, Plant or Fungi-Like

ANIMAL-LIKE-Heterotrophs
Paramecium (in background) move quickly using Cilia.

PLANT-LIKE - Autotrophs. Use chloroplasts to perform photosynthesis.
Euglena pictured use flagella to move.

Algae are also Plant-Like Protists

  • Grows in top surface or near water.
  • Performs photosynthesis.
  • Seaweed is one form of Algae.
  • Can be brown, red or green.

FUNGI-LIKE-Absorbs decomposing matter in damp areas for food.

Moves by slowly extending cytoplasm.

AMOEBA - Animal-like protist that moves with Pseudopods.
It is heterotrophic.

Volvox

Multicellular Protists with "Baby" Colonies.
