PROTIST+FUNGI

BY: LAURA PIKE

PROTIST:

  • Eukaryotes that cannot be classified as animal, plant, fungi
  • All protist live in moist surroundings
  • Most protist are unicellular
  • Kingdoms: animal like, plant like, and fungus like protist

ANIMAL-LIKE PROTIST

  • They are heterotrophs
  • Most are able to move from place to place to obtain food
  • Are unicellular
  • Can be classified into four groups

FOUR GROUPS OF ANIMAL LIKE PROTIST

  • Protozoans with pseudopods
  • Protozoans with cilia
  • Protozoans with flagella
  • Protozoans that are parasites

PLANT LIKE PROTIST

  • Commonly called algae
  • They are autotrophs
  • Important food sources for other organisms
  • Most of oxygen in earths atmosphere
  • Vary in size/ color, different pigments

DIATOMS

  • Unicellular protist
  • Beautiful glasslike cell walls
  • Some float near surfaces if lakes
  • Food source of heterotrophs in the water
  • When they die their cell wall forms diatomaceous

DINOFLAGELLATES

  • Unicellular algae
  • Algae surrounded by stiff plates that look like a suit of armor
  • Come in a variety of colors/ many glow in the dark
  • All have two flagella held in grooves between their plates
  • They twirl like toy tops as they move through water

EUGLENOIDS

  • Green, unicellular algae
  • Mostly found in fresh water
  • Can be heterotrophs in certain conditions
  • When sunlight is available they are autotrophs

ALGAE!!

  • Red algae
  • Green algae
  • Brown algae

FUNGUS-LIKE PROTIST

Slime molds and water molds and downy mildews

SLIME MOLDS

  • Often brilliantly colored
  • Live in forest floors and other moist, shady places
  • Feed on bacteria and other micro organisms
  • Some slime molds you need a microscope or see them
  • Some can cover an area of serval meters

WATER MOLDS/DOWNY MOLDA

  • Most live in water
  • Often grow as tiny threads that look like fuzz
  • They attack many food crops, such as potatoes
  • Water mold made history when destroyed potato crops
  • More than one million people in Ireland died because of the lose of crops

FUNGI

Eukaryotes that have cell walls, are heterotrophs that feed by absorbing their food

SAC FUNGUS

  • Produces spores in structures
  • The spores look like long sacs
  • The largest group of fungi
  • They include yeasts, morels, and truffles

CLUB FUNGUS

  • Produces spores
  • Spores produced into tiny club like structures
  • This group includes mushrooms, rusts, and puff balls

ZYGOTE FUNGUS

  • Produce very resistant spores
  • This group contains many common fruit
  • Bread molds, and fruit are included

USES OF FUNGUS

  • Yeast for making bread
  • Molds are used to make cheeses
  • Mushrooms are good on pizza or in salad
  • (don't pick wild mushrooms, they are poisonous)
