ERIKSON'S STAGES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

STAGE 1 "TRUST VERSUS MISTRUST"

  • Ages: early infancy
  • Child needs to have a stable attachment for them to feel comfortable.
  • They should feel that they are living in a reliable world to develop trust.

STAGE 2 "AUTONOMY VERSUS SHAME AND DOUBT"

  • Ages: (1-3 years)
  • Central Q: Can I do it? (By myself)
  • Being able to take control of the body and the environment

STAGE 3 "INITIATIVE VERSUS GUILT"

  • (3-6 years)
  • The ability to make independent decisions
  • Central Q: Am I good or bad?

STAGE 4 "INDUSTRY VERSUS INFERIORITY"

  • Ages: 6-12 years
  • Children wants be encouraged and acknowledged on what they are doing.
  • Qs: Am I successful?

  • Ages: early teens
  • Personal value
  • Concerned of what people think of them (reputation)
  • Trying to be who they think they are
  • Qs: Who am I? Where am I going?

STAGE 6 "INTIMACY VERSUS ISOLATION"

  • Age: young adult
  • Looking for a relationship (friendship)
  • Someone you are connected to
  • Isolation because you are scared of getting hurt
  • Goal: Find the person who you want to spent the rest of your life with

  • Age: older adult
  • Qs: have I lived a full life?
  • Being able to reflect on your life
  • Have you made any achievements
  • Were you able to spent your life with the right person.
